22 June 2010 : «  the Attractiveness evening »

The Greater Paris Investment Agency invited a panel of international investors and decision-makers in presence of Anne-Marie Idrac, Minister of State for External Trade to discuss the Greater Paris advantages and challenges in the face of growing competition from Asian cities, as revealed by the Global Cities Investment Monitor 2010.

The panel composed of Pierre-Mathieu Duhamel, Chairman of the Strategic Committee, KPMG, Léo Sun, Managing Director France, Huawei, John Vassallo, Vice President EU Affairs General Counsel, Microsoft and Chiara Corazza, Managing Director, Greater Paris Investment Agency agreed that, in spite of the Asian Cities new attractiveness to strategic functions such as headquarters and research centres, the Greater Paris was one of the best placed Western Global Cities, thanks to its exceptionally diverse economy and to its innovative clusters.

The Monitor fully reflects this opinion, since Paris is in 2010 the first non-Asian Global City for Greenfield Investments in Research centres and the fastest-growing European City for headquarters.

On this occasion, Anne-Marie Idrac and Pierre Simon awarded the Greater Paris Investment Agency “Trophee of the Best Investor of the Year”  to 4 companies who set up in the Greater Paris region in 2009:  Genpact (USA), Procubeway SAS (India), ZTE (China) and CMC Blue France (Vietnam) (click here to know more about the award ceremony)

The Greater Paris Investment Agency launched the Global Cities Investment Monitor, in partnership with KPMG, a yearly benchmark comparing perceptions and reality regarding the attractiveness of global cities. A survey based on a sample of more than 500 global business leaders was conducted by OpinionWay, while investment fluxes were analysed over the last five years.
Investing criteria have changed during the crisis: political stability (92%) and economic growth (89%) now dominate.
The image of Paris is quite good: the city ranks third (35%) with only New York (41%) and London (42%) ahead. Regarding attractiveness, Asia rises, with 5 cities in the Top 10. Mumbai is posed to become the favourite destination of international investors over the next three years.
Paris is also well ranked regarding real investments: fourth in the world in 2008-9, third over the last five years. In the Top 5 cities, only Hong-Kong is more dynamic. London leads with 270 projects (191 in Paris).
Paris is the fastest growing top metropolis for research centres; it is now globally in third position – in pole position at European level. Headquarters (+175% in 2008-9) are also a strong asset: Paris is ranked fourth worldwide regarding these strategic investments.
